Name: Special Presentation – Saving the Wood Island Life Saving Station
Date: October 22, 2023
Time: 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM EDT
Event Description:
The community is invited to attend a free special presentation by Sam Reid, President of the Wood Island Life Saving Station Assoc. on Sunday, October 22, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Moseley Gallery at the Custom House Maritime Museum.

The Wood Island Life Saving Staton (WILSS) is an iconic landmark off the coast of Maine that was once used as a base for men who saved the lives of mariners in distress. Built in 1907, the WILSS housed brave surfmen who were part of the US Life Saving Service (a forerunner of the US Coast Guard) who would wait with small rowing boats to go out to help mariners in distress in terrible conditions year-round.

Having stood watch at the mouth of the Piscataqua River in Kittery Point, ME, for 114 years, this historic gem was left to slowly crumble for 60 years, at risk of losing its purpose and history forever. Hear from Mr. Reid about the journey of tenacity and determination to save the WILSS by undertaking a historically accurate interior and exterior restoration.

Seating is limited, so please RSVP at dtorres@thechmm.org to reserve your seat. Please note: the Museum is not ADA accessible.
