Name: RISK TAKING – The Spirituality of Pauli Murray
Date: May 31, 2018
Time: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM EDT
Event Description:
Pauli Murray was a path-breaking poet, activist, attorney, professor, and Episcopal priest whose legacy of human rights work continues to reverberate. She also had a strong faith that was enlivened by deep spiritual friendships. Friends nurtured her self-awareness, her knowledge of God, and her sense of God’s action in the world. Some of her life’s greatest risks were encouraged by devoted and imaginative friends. During our time together, we will allow Pauli Murray’s life to spark an exploration of spiritual friendship. We’ll reflect on her bond with a few cherished companions, including a beloved dog. Our exploration will include lectures, meditations, letter-writing exercises, and time with an examen (a set of contemplative questions) based on Pauli Murray’s spirituality.

Dr. Donyelle C. McCray serves as Assistant Professor of Homiletics at Yale Divinity School where her research focuses on preaching, Christian spirituality, and lived theology. Donyelle is currently writing a book entitled Pauli Murray’s Spirituality of Risk-Taking, which examines turning points in Pauli Murray’s prayer life and vocation. Before entering academia, Donyelle worked as an attorney and as a hospice chaplain and she brings insights from these experiences to her teaching and scholarship.
