Newburyport Art presents

Four New Exhibitions Opening Saturday!

Saturday, September 30, 2023 – Sunday, October 15, 2023

Newburyport, MA - Newburyport Art (NAA) presents four new exhibitions opening on Saturday, September 30th. The exhibitions include Creative Views by the NAA Featured Interest Group “Band of Brushes”, A Constant Reminder by MakerJake (a NBPT Murals artist), The Outsiders by NAA Featured Interest Group “Newburyport Ten”, and a Member Spotlight Show Canines of Cuba by Pat Kennedy-Corlin. These exhibitions will run concurrently and close on October 15th.

Creative Views by Band of Brushes is on view in the Sargent Gallery. Band of Brushes is a group of ten local artists who paint en plein air in various landscape, seacoast, and garden venues together. “Plein air” is a French expression meaning “in the open air.” Artists include: Dorothy Aham, Michele Champion, Grace Daly, Karen Fitzgerald, Mary Francis, Christine Molitor Johnson, Fran Kaplan, Kris Munroe, Mary Ann Varoski, and Mary Webber. A reception for Band of Brushes will be held on Saturday, September 30, from 4:00 – 6:00pm.

On view in the Hartson Gallery is A Constant Reminder by Makerjake. Makerjake, a pseudonym for artist and educator Jake Ginga, is well known in Massachusetts for his unique approach to portraiture and the seamless integration of indigenous iconography and contemporary design elements. The convergence of Makerjake’s Native American heritage and typical middle-class upbringing forms a bold narrative of self-discovery in his art. His art beckons all to peel away layers, reigniting the thrill of unearthing one's essence and fostering connections within ourselves and the contemporary human story. On Saturday morning, September 30th, Makerjake will be painting out on Independent Street across from NAA to complete his mural for the NBPT Murals project. A reception and artist talk available to all will follow around 3pm in the Hartson Gallery.

The ‘Outsiders’ by Newburyport Ten is on view in the Hills Gallery. The Newburyport Ten is a group of dedicated painters who gather weekly to paint en plein air. They paint year-round, despite the elements, in order to capture the beauty of nature. Newburyport Ten are: Cynthia Cooper, Dale Greene, Market Isek, Margery Jennings, John Kessler, Susan Luca, Dan Shaw, Susan Stranc, Janet Sutherland and Susan Spellman. A reception will be held alongside Band of Brushes, on Saturday, September 30, from 4:00 – 6:00pm.

Canines of Cuba by Pat Kennedy-Corlin is on view in the Mural Gallery. Pat is an award-winning Fine Art Photographer and dedicated animal advocate. Pat travels internationally, photographing wildlife, landscape, architecture, street life and people. Pat writes about this exhibition; “I fell in love with Cuba the moment I landed. Halfway through the trip, I suffered a devastating family loss. Try as I may, it was impossible to get an emergency flight home. In a surreal and shattered state, I spent my remaining days sitting on the sidewalks in the cities of Havana and Trinidad. With my camera in hand, the dogs of the streets welcomed me. Three years on, I returned to the island to complete 'The Canines Of Cuba’ Photographic Journey. Born of a broken heart, this body of work became the gift that helped heal my soul.”

The galleries are free and open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00am–5:00pm and Sunday from 1:00pm–5:00pm. Newburyport Art is closed on Mondays. The ground-floor Hills Gallery has an accessible entrance. More information, as well as an online gallery is available at newburyportart.org.
